Outcomes
Perform as an entry level competent phlebotomist in a clinical setting, by having performed a minimum of 100 unaided blood collections (to include venipunctures and capillary punctures) and participated in 100 hours of clinical training in a CLIA regulated, accredited facility.
Perform other duties required of a phlebotomist (i.e. identify and properly label biohazardous specimens, follow standard operating procedures to collect specimens and perform competent/effective venipunctures on patients.)
Apply theoretical concepts to appropriate clinical practices.
Demonstrate professionalism and proper communication skills.
Program Overview
The Phlebotomy certificate is designed to prepare students to learn how to properly collect, handle, and process blood specimens for analysis in health care settings. Students learn proper specimen collection for various types of samples.
Students in health career programs are advised to consult the Code of Campus Affairs and Regulations, section 11.4. This regulation concerns completion of all courses in health career curricula being completed with a grade of C or better.

This program is approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018; 773-714-8880.
Each student in this program must have a physical exam, criminal background check without any disqualifying convictions, and a negative drug screen after registering for HLTH 1412 - Phlebotomy Practicum.
Students who complete this certificate program are eligible to take the national certification examination given by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Phlebotomy program outcomes are based on NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science, the program’s accrediting body) criteria.
Graduation rates
Graduation rates are high. They are based upon those who began the second half of the program and completed it, and are compared to the NAACLS benchmark of 70% over a three year period.
Placement rates
Placement rates are determined by feedback from graduates using a survey 6 months after completion. Rates are determined by those indicating they are seeking employment or who have become employed in the field. They are compared to the NAACLS benchmark of 70% over a three year period.
Certification exam pass rates
The program’s pass rate is compared to the national pass rate and to the NAACLS benchmark of 75% over a three year period.
